MARKET FORCES

Shopping at London’s markets isn’t just about picking up bargains and rummaging through tonnes of knick-knacks, clothes and all sorts of mystical ephemera and earthly accoutrements – although they give you plenty of opportunity to do that. It’s also about taking in the character of this vibrant city, in all its many facets and moods.

Borough

Here in some form since the 13th century, Borough Market (Map; 7407 1002; www.boroughmarket.org.uk; cnr Borough High & Stoney Sts SE1; 11am-5pm Thu, noon-6pm Fri, 9am-4pm Sat; London Bridge) is testament to the British public’s increasing interest in good food. Helped by celebrity shopper Jamie Oliver, ‘London’s Larder’ has enjoyed an enormous renaissance in recent years, overflowing with food lovers. As well as a section devoted to quality fresh fruit, exotic vegetables and organic meat, there’s a fine-foods retail market, with products such as home-grown honey and homemade bread. Throughout, takeaway stalls allow you to sample a sizzling gourmet sausage or tuck into a quality burger. Shoppers queue at the excellent Monmouth Coffee Company, Neal’s Yard Dairy, the Spanish deli Brindisa or Ginger Pig butcher. Plans for a new railway link threaten to cut the market in two, but the market’s trustees claim ‘it won’t affect the market’ (which seems hard to believe). Check the website for updates.
